Hey there, welcome to the very first entry of what we hope will be a series of engaging blog posts, shedding light on the evolution of our site. It’s incredible to see how something that started as a humble project has grown, and we’re excited to share these milestones with you.
This post is all about the nitty-gritty improvements we’ve been making over the past few weeks – the kind that might seem small but are all about making your experience here smoother and more enjoyable. We call them quality-of-life updates, and they’re geared towards enhancing usability for you, the average user.
Without further ado, let’s take a closer look at these tweaks. We believe they’ll not only make your time on the site more seamless but also offer insights into how we’re striving to create a platform that truly caters to your needs. Your feedback is invaluable, and we can’t wait to have you along for the ride as we continue to refine and grow.
Smarter, More Consistent Filters
One small feature, or lack thereof, was the in-page filters resetting themselves when trying to select them. For example, in the screenshot below, changing the ‘Duration’ would also reset the ‘Location’, which is not how most users wanted these filters to work. This has been fixed, and ‘Duration’, ‘Location’ and ‘Group’ filters do not override each other, and can now be set in any order. Additionally, if you’re a frequent user, considering bookmarking links with your filters preset (for example, if you like SOGs Against with a ‘Duration’ of L10 and a ‘Group’ of C/W/D, bookmark this link to save you some clicks).
Note: This does not apply to the ‘View’ filter, as it is implemented in a different manner, so use this filter once Duration/Location/Group filters have been set to your liking.
New SAT Against by Position & Team Hits and Blocks Sheets
In the past few weeks, two new sheets were added. First, Shot Attempts (SAT) Against by Position looks the same as the SOG Against sheet, but highlights how many attempts each team allows by position instead of shots on goal. Second, the Team Hits and Blocks chart was added, which highlights both hits and blocks for and against. With blocks becoming a more common prop to bet, and hits available on sites/apps such as PrizePicks, this was a sheet directly requested by you the users.
Positional Groupings on Goals/SOG/SAT Against by Position Charts
As you may have seen in the How Accurate Are SOGs Against by Position? blog post, there are some concerns with the source data for the ‘Against by Position’ charts. The new grouping filter allows you to see data for all these charts broken down by C/LW/RW/D, C/Wingers/D and Forwards/D. This was a feature requested by many, and now you can use whichever grouping you feel best suits your needs.
Games Played on ‘Recent’ Team Offensive/Defensive/Hits and Blocks Charts
Prior to being updated, these team charts used the last 20 days worth of games for Recent/All data, and 30 days of data for Recent/Home or Away data. Unlike the ‘Against by Position’ charts, I don’t have the ability to get this data by L10 by team, so this solution aimed to provide approximately 10 games worth of data depending on the filters selected by the user. I chose to not display the number of games played for two reasons. First, the number of games played isn’t show on the L10 ‘Against by Position’ charts, and second, I didn’t want to make it overly confusing.
With that being said, I believe transparency is very important, and the more you know about this data, the more useful it is. GP will now be listed for all ‘Recent’ data, so you know exactly what you’re looking at. The goal is still to provide approximately 10 games worth of data, though it will vary from team to team, especially when a ‘Home’ or ‘Away’ split is set, as extended road trips and home stands are a reality of an 82-game schedule. I’ll ensure more accurate data by regularly updating the time range we’re looking at, aiming for around 10 games played per team. At the time of this blog post, we are currently looking at L30 days for Recent/All data and L50 days for Recent/Home or Away data.
Highlight Selected Team
One of the smaller updates to mention, but a nice little feature that makes seeing where a team ranks in each category that much easier, plus it makes it easier to highlight a selected team if you’re sharing a screenshot of the chart. Hovering over a team will highlight where that team is in all other tables on the page, and clicking on a team will keep it highlighted until you click anywhere else on the page.
That wraps up the quality-of-life update summary. Have questions or suggestions for the site? Let me know in the comments below. You can also share ideas and stay up to date with my work by following @ShotPropz on Twitter/X.
